Malar edema can be a result of cosmetic procedures. Alcohol consumption, and salt intake and lack of sleep can affect their appearance. In the article ‘Malar edema: Perspectives from plastic surgery and ophthalmology,’ the authors state that lymphatic drainage massage techniques can reduce swelling.

Malar edema and mounds may be confused with festoons. Festoons are “severe sagging folds with muscle and skin laxity.” The appearance of festoons may change when the client gazes upward and downward or squeezes their eyelids together, while malar edema doesn’t usually change with these movements.
